What is R-DES?
R-DES is a programmable control to improve the response of your subwoofer(s) in your room. There are two components to the R-DES system. The first part is a small hardware box that has stereo RCA inputs and outputs. You can use one set for a single sub or both if you have stereo subs. This box also contains a USB port for connection to your computer. The second part of R-DES is the powerful and easy to load software for your Windows based computer. The photo gives you an idea of how elegant and powerful this interface is.

How do I use R-DES?
First you will measure the bass response in your room. You can do this with a RadioShack SPL meter and the test tone CD and graphing tools that come with R-DES. Or you can use measurement software like TrueRTA, EFT, etc,.*   Once you see what you want to correct, you will run the R-DES application on your PC and set up filters to correct those problems. Let's say you have a 8dB peak at 70Hz, you can setup a filter in R-DES that is a notch that is exactly the opposite of your peak. This notch will then cancel out the peak and you'll have a flat response! The four filters allow you to very effectively smooth a subwoofer response.

What are the four coolest features of R-DES?
#1) It will make a major improvement in the sound quality of virtually any system using a subwoofer #2) It is easy to use. #3) It is extremely powerful; the hardware box can store four different subwoofer curves. See the photo above for examples. In addition, you can create an unlimited number of curves in your computer and download any four different curves anytime you want! #4) It is very affordable and will improve your system far more than the cost would indicate.

What do I need to use R-DES?
You will need a PC running Windows 98 or newer and some method of measuring the room response. (SPL meter,  TruRTA, EFT or the measurement package that we will have available.)*

Other cool features:

  • Programmable subsonic filter allows you to "protect" your sub without cutting out any more bottom end than you have to.
  • Programmable crossover allows for additional installation flexiblity.
  • Once the hardware box is programmed you do not have to stay connected to the computer.
  • Supplied with computer graph paper and a test CD to make plotting your room response EASY! Just add an inexpensive Radioshack SPL meter and you're ready to go!
  • Future proof, software is easily upgradeable!

What about using R-DES with DIY subs?
R-DES is perfect for use with DIY subs. Think of the possibilities; no need for separate crossover, subsonic filter, EQ, etc.  Ditch the low performing plate amp and use any good amplifier with R-DES!

* We will soon be able to offer a test measurement package that includes the software and a microphone to do your own testing. This package is elegantly simply to use, yet powerful and accurate. For example; it will allow you to average the measurements from a number of sitting places in the room! And, it will be very affordable.

I have more questions about R-DES. How do I get those questions answered?
The quickest way is to check on our official ACI Forum. Right at the top of the page we have started a thread devoted to the use of R-DES. Feel free to post your new question if you don't see it already answered in the thread.  ACI Forum on Audiocircle
